Kambala – An insight into a rural sport of Mangalore

One of the many rural sports existing in the coastal districts of Karnataka (India), Kambala has indeed lived in the hearts of the folk for many a years in Udupi and Mangalore.

It’s a buffalo race in a paddy field filled with slush and mud, a traditional sport with a touch of coastal flavour. If this sport happens to fall on the day of a festival, then you would be lucky to get yourself muddy and dirty on a day filled with fun and frolic. A 50m dash in knee deep muddy water in the open paddy fields, sack-race, cock-fighting and plenty of other rural sports- it’s always fun to be a part of the celebrations and to get yourself as dirty as you could before heading back home.

Below you can see some of the pictures of Kambala taken by one of my professors who is very enthusiastic about aerial photography. I had the privilege to work under him in developing unmanned aerial vehicles during my under graduation.
